Night of Vonnegut 2016 is the Best Yet!

thank you! (1)

Greeting, Earthlings, Tralfamadorians, and everyone in between!

Here at KVML HQ, we can’t wipe the grins off of our faces. After months of preparation, dozens of helping hands from all around the community, and nine and a half hours of wearing high heels (oh, wait, was that last one just me?), we had a Night of Vonnegut to remember.

Hundreds of Vonnegut fans from all over the country gathered in the beautiful Indiana History Center to show their support for the Vonnegut Library’s mission of carrying on Kurt’s legacy and helping to spread his message of peace, common decency, and critical thinking. We are so grateful!

Thanks to our generous sponsors Ice MillerParr Richey Obremskey Frandsen & Patterson, and Katz & Korin, we were able to fill the History Center with big laughter, great food, and lasting words. With a stack of banned books on every table (and some amazing chocolate cake), we started our 2016 programming in style.

And we didn’t just deliver with big entertainment (and big slices of cake); this year’s Night of Vonnegut broke some huge news: 2017 will be the Year of Vonnegut! Ten years after the last Year of Vonnegut (and ten years after Kurt Vonnegut passed away), 2017 marks an important year in the history of the Vonnegut Library and in the history of Indianapolis.  Year of Vonnegut will feature monthly programming with partners from all over the city.

Vonnegut once wrote:

“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.”

Thank you to all who have taken the leap alongside us and helped us build this small but mighty community of ours.

“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.”

Check out Julian Newman’s (or as we call him around here, the “other, more talented Newman” :P) great photos from the evening below.

Big thanks to our sponsors for the evening: Ice Miller, Parr Richey Obremsky Frandsen & Patterson, Katz & Korin, Rodney and Cindy Allen, Fred and Annette Biesecker, Indiana Business Bank, The Lanosga Family, Monarch Beverages, Sun King, Printing Partners, RAMJAC Corporation, Rosetta Books, Synergy, James Alexander and Dark Rain Thom, Kip and Robin Tew, Richard Vonnegut, and Julia and J.T. Whitehead.

Friends came together from far and wide to “fart around,” just as Vonnegut would have liked it.

The silent auction featured some of the best Indy (and beyond) has to offer!

The silent auction featured some of the best Indy (and beyond) has to offer! Thanks to local company Qtego, guests could bid right from their phones. It got a little heated.

Here at the Vonnegut Library, we get by with a LOT of help from our friends, and Scott Vonnegut & Kathleen Angelone (of the Vonnegut family and Bookmamas, respectively) are two great ones.

We couldn't have done it without our wonderful staff!
